mpg4 converter
To convert video files from and to mpg4, you need a conversion program. You can use Movavi Video Converter as an mpg4 converter. In order to ensure the correct work of an mpg4 converter, you need to download and install a specific codec pack. mpg4 codec overview
MPEG-4 is an international standard primarily used for compressing digital audio and video data. It was introduced in 1998 by Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). mpg4 codec is mainly used to compress video data in streaming media, CD distribution, videophone and broadcasting.
mpg4 is based on MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 standards and possesses most of their features. Along with this, mpg4 codec includes a number of various additions and improvements. mpg4 is not a finished product, it is still being developed and improved.
The codec is divided into several parts. The most significant parts of mpg4 codec are part 2 (including Advanced Simple Profile, used by DivX and Xvid codecs and by QuickTime 6) and part 10 (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 or Advanced Video Coding, used by high-definition video media like Blu-ray Disc).
The codec consists of several profiles. A profile defines a set of tools that a decoder uses for media data coding. For each of these Profiles one or more Levels can be set; this is also known as a Profile/Level combination. The combination restricts the computational complexity.
There are different Profiles for different types of media content: audio, visual, and graphics.
The most widely used video container format for Microsoft mpg4 video codec is AVI.
Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec
Windows Media software by Microsoft contains an MPEG-4 encoder and decoder. Microsoft uses MPEG-4 Simple Profile, the simplest Visual Profile of MPEG-4 codec.
Currently, there are three versions of Microsoft MPEG-4 Codec:
- Microsoft MPEG-4 version 1 (mpg4);
- Microsoft MPEG-4 version 2 (mp42);
- Microsoft MPEG-4 version 3 (mp43).
Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec Pack contains the MPG4, MP42, and MP43 decompressors.
This package is intended to provide the best MS-MPEG4 codec/decompressor available for MS-MPEG4 V3 and V2 compression and playback. It comes with the Windows Media Audio V2 codec enabled for use in AVI as well which is newer than the one DivX 3.11 alpha uses.
