How to make a montage of photos

Photomontage is usually understood as creating complete images from parts of different photos. This technique is widely used for making advertising banners, personalized e-cards, funny pictures, etc. Making a professional montage of photos can often require hours of hard work with complex photo-editing programs. However, a simple photomontage can be created even by a complete beginner! If you have no or little experience in photo editing, we recommend you try Movavi Photo Editor – an easy-to-use picture montage program.

Making a montage of photos has never been so easy

The program includes basic photomontage tools as well as many other useful functions:

  • Object and background removal tools
  • Copying and pasting image fragments
  • A variety of stylish effects and filters (Grayscale, Sepia, Oil painting, etc.)
  • Color parameter adjustments (brightness, contrast, saturation, etc.)
  • Cropping and rotation tools
  • Customizable captions

From this tutorial, you will learn how to remove unwanted objects from a photo and replace a background using Movavi Photo Editor. Just download the appropriate version of the software and follow the steps below.

Step 1. Install the photomontage software

Open the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

Step 2. Upload your photo

Click Browse for Images and choose a desired photo. You can also add a photo by dragging it into the program’s working area.

Step 3. Remove unwanted objects

Open the Smart Eraser tab. Select Brush and fully cover the objects you want to remove with red highlighting. You can also use Magic Wand or Lasso to mark the unneeded objects. If you highlighted more than required, use Eraser to clear the excess. Then, click Start Erasing to remove the marked objects.

The automatic removal may leave behind some blemishes on a photo. To get rid of those, use the Stamp tool. With its help, you can copy the appropriate part of the image to cover up the flaws. Select Stamp from the editing panel, hold down the Alt key and left-click on the area you want to copy. After that, just paint over the blemishes.

Step 4. Change the background

Open the Change Background tab. Use the Auto Select function to automatically mark people in the photo.

If you want to select objects manually, choose Foreground Brush and mark the objects you want to keep in the photo with the green highlighting. Then select the red Background Brush and mark the background you want to remove. After that, the foreground object will have a marquee selection around it. Make corrections with an appropriate brush if necessary. Click Next Step.

Refine the object edges with the Object Selection and Background Selection tools. Use Hair Selection Tool to delineate fine details like fur, grass, hair, and more. To remove the entire background, hit Next Step.

To rotate the saved fragment, drag the top marker in the appropriate direction, as shown in the screen image. Here, you can also soften object edges by dragging the Blur edges slider.

Now you can choose the background color or leave it transparent. To set an image as a background, click Add Image. Choose a picture from our collection or hit Upload to find one from your computer. Click Apply, when you’re satisfied with the final result. To cancel all changes to the image made in this step, click Reset.

Step 5. Copy and paste a fragment from one image to another

Using Movavi Photo Editor, you can copy a fragment from one image and paste it onto another.

First, open the image from which you want to copy a fragment. Click Insert image tab and use the Rectangular Marquee, Polygonal Lasso, or Lasso selection tools to draw an outline around an object to be copied. Click Copy to copy it to the clipboard. You can also right-click the selected fragment and choose Copy or use the standard keyboard shortcuts to do this.

Now open the image you want to put the copied fragment into and click Paste (or click the right mouse button and choose Paste). You can also use the Paste an Image button. Drag the new element to the desired position in the image. You can rotate the fragment using the top marker, as described in step 4, or change the size of the piece. Toggle the Shadow switch if you want the inserted fragment to cast a shadow into the original image or add a colored outline using the Outline option. Finally, click Apply to save the changes.

Step 6. Save your picture

Click Save file in the upper right corner of the interface. Choose the appropriate format and save your photo.

As you can see, montage of photos is easy with Movavi Photo Editor! Use our photomontage creator to make amazing digital wedding and birthday postcards as well as funny pics to surprise your friends and relatives.
