Freeing Space on iPhones: Tips and Tricks

Edited by Pat Bitton

July 24, 2019

Your iPhone storage can be pretty large, but it is still limited. Even with a 512 GB model, you may find it tough to keep enough space free for updates or other purposes. Applications are getting bigger, too, so you may need to clear out storage to download a new game or movie. There are a few different approaches to how to free up space on iPhones.

Delete Unused Files

Take a look at your iPhone storage. In the Settings menu, click General and find iPhone Storage. You’ll see what’s taking up space on your iPhone. If it is an unused application, you can completely delete it or just offload it (in this case, associated documents and data will be saved). To get more storage space, you can also delete movies you’ve already watched, music you don’t like anymore, and the photos you don’t need (for example, duplicates). Don’t forget to clear the ‘Recently Deleted’ folder, too.

Free Up Browser and Messenger History

Sometimes it is also useful to clear the cache and history in all your browsers and messenger apps. Depending on the selected options, messenger apps can store every funny picture and video your friends have ever shared with you, so you may need to delete these files from time to time. Website visiting history is also not much use. And why would you store text messages? Most don’t contain any information you might need in the future, so you can force your smartphone to auto-delete these messages after a specific period of time. Another way to get rid of unneeded texts is to delete all the conversations you’re finished with.

So, you’ve done everything you could, but you still don’t have enough space. There’s another way to free up storage: you can reduce the size of your files. In this case, you won’t lose any information, but the message ‘iPhone memory full’ will disappear and you’ll be able to finally download something new. Take a look at the guide below.

Clear Space on iPhones by Compressing Media Files

Some files require more space than others while being almost the same quality. It all depends on the codec used to compress your file: some are more effective than others. Another parameter is the bitrate – the number that shows how many bits should be used for every second of video or audio. Therefore, to reduce your file size, you can alter the codec or bitrate using appropriate software.

Get Movavi Video Converter, and you’ll be able to easily transform large files into smaller ones by altering their bitrate and codec. Here are the instructions for how to clear space on iPhones by reducing the size of your media files. Before you start, transfer the files you need to convert from your smartphone to your computer.

Download the Movavi Software

Get the installation file for Windows or Mac. Double-click it and follow the on-screen recommendations. Launch the program.

Add Your Large Files

Click the Add Media button. Depending on your media file types, hit the Add Video, Add Audio, or Add Images button. All the files you add at one time will be converted to the same format, so you might need to run more than one iteration to convert your different types of media. As an example, let’s convert video files, which always take a lot of space. The process for audio and images is similar.

Select the Output Format

After you’ve added your files, they appear in the main window. Under the files, there are several tabs. Go to the Video tab if you’re converting videos (for soundtracks and photos, choose Audio or Images respectively). Find and click the preset group called MP4 – this video format is supported by the majority of devices including Apple ones. Choose the preset that suits you best. You will see the ‘after’ file size below the output filename, so it’s easy to compare the ‘before and after’ sizes.

Adjust the File Size

Now click the button with the future file size. You’ll see a window where you can adjust the size of your file by moving the corresponding slider. Check whether the output video quality works for you by clicking Convert sample. You can apply the same changes to all your files – just mark the Apply bitrate to all files check box.

Convert Files and Save the Result

It will be easier to find the converted files if you put them in a specific folder. Choose where to save the files by clicking the Folder button. Now click Convert. Your files will be ready for use in no time.

After conversion, you can delete the bigger versions of your files from your iPhone and transfer the smaller ones onto it. Enjoy the freedom!
