How to Make a GIF from a YouTube Video

Everyone knows what a great resource YouTube is when you’re looking for a video on the Internet. No matter what you’re looking for – a music video, an educational movie, a video blog – you can be pretty sure you’ll find it on YouTube. But what if you want to create a GIF from that video once you’ve found it?

Making and sharing GIF images is a hot Internet trend. A GIF image is different from typical pictures in JPG or PNG formats because it is animated. People use these moving images to express their emotions and ideas in new and unconventional ways. With Movavi Screen Capture, which is also a handy YouTube-to-GIF converter, you can easily turn YouTube videos into GIF files and become a champion GIF creator! All you need to do is follow the instructions in this tutorial.

This step-by-step guide applies to both the Windows and Mac versions of our GIF generator – just download the version you need and follow the instructions below.

1. Install Movavi Screen Capture

Download the program from the Movavi website and install it on your computer. You'll be able to convert any YouTube clip to a funny GIF animation in just a few moments!

2. Set the Recording Parameters

Launch the program and open the video on YouTube. Choose Record screen from the program’s launch panel. Draw the capture frame by holding the left mouse button and dragging the cursor over the video area on the YouTube screen. Once this is done, you can fine-tune the size of the frame manually by pulling its edges, or open the Capture Area list and choose from the convenient preset sizes for YouTube – just select the appropriate preset size and the frame will be placed automatically.

You can move the frame around by clicking and holding the button in the center of the frame.

If you want to set the duration of the recording, adjust the capture timer in the Capture menu. Select the Schedule Recording... option to specify when the program should automatically start and stop capturing the screen. If you're a Mac user, you’ll find the menu bar at the top of your screen, not in the capture interface.

3. Capture a Video from YouTube

Once you’ve set the recording parameters, get ready to capture the YouTube video. Click the Rec button to start recording. After a five-second countdown, the program will begin capturing, so start playing your YouTube video right away. You can control the process by clicking the Cancel, Pause or Stop buttons on the screen. You can also use hotkeys: Windows users should press F9 to pause and F10 to stop capturing; Mac users should press ⌥ ⌘ 1 and ⌥ ⌘ 2 respectively.

4. Edit the Recorded Video

When the recording process is finished, you can specify the particular fragment you want to use to make your animated GIF. Place the marker on the seek bar and press the scissors icon to mark the points where you want to cut, then select each of the unwanted segments with a left click and hit the trash can button to delete them individually. Now you can save the video in your desired format by clicking the Save As button.

5. Save the Video into GIF

Select GIF on the quick access panel. If you need a specific GIF setting, expand the More presets list and click on Video and audio, then open the GIF list and choose the target size for your GIF. Click on the Save button.

Congratulations! Now you know how to create GIFs from YouTube, so use our GIF maker to capture as many YouTube videos as you want.
