How to Download Vimeo Videos

Unlike most social media websites, vimeo.com officially supports its subscribers’ downloading videos that have been uploaded to the site. Unfortunately, the rest of the process is not so easy: to download a movie from Vimeo, you have to sign up first and, even if you have an account on Vimeo, you cannot download a video if its owner has specified certain privacy settings. You could always try using a third-party Vimeo downloader, but keep in mind that such programs may cause problems with other applications on your computer.

Movavi has a solution that’s much better: you can save Vimeo videos to your computer simply by recording them with Movavi Screen Recorder, our multifunctional screen recorder. Using this handy program, you can make video tutorials, record Skype conversations with your relatives and friends, save online videos from Vimeo and even convert Vimeo videos to MP3.

The steps outlined below will work for both the Windows and Mac versions of Movavi Screen Recorder. Download the version for your OS using the appropriate link, and let’s get started!

1. Install the Vimeo Downloader

Run the distribution file you’ve downloaded and install the software on your computer following the onscreen instructions – you'll be ripping Vimeo streams in no time!

2. Specify Capture Settings and Record Video

Open the video you want to rip from vimeo.com and launch the video grabber. Draw the capture frame with your mouse so that it fits over the online video – the guidelines and magnified preview will help you do this precisely. After the capture interface appears, you can adjust the frame by pulling on its edges or by opening the Capture Area list and selecting a ready-made preset. If you want to play the video full-screen, select your display from the Full Screen section of the list.

If you wish, you can set a time for when the program should stop recording and take a break while it’s working. Hit the alarm clock button and specify the required duration before you start recording.

Once everything is ready, click the REC button, and the program will begin recording. Click the Pause and Stop buttons or use hotkeys to control the capture process. To pause and resume the recording, press F9 in Windows, or ⌥ ⌘ 1 on the Mac. To stop capturing, use F10 and ⌥ ⌘ 2 respectively.

3. Cut the Recording; Convert the Vimeo Video to MP3, MP4, or Another Format (Optional)

The grabbed video from Vimeo will be automatically saved to your hard drive as an MKV file. However, if you want to cut out unneeded sections and save the result in a different format, you can easily do this in the preview window. Place the marker at the beginning of the unwanted segment and cut the video in two with the scissors tool, then do the same at the end of the segment. Select the part you want to delete and press the trash can icon. Hit Save As to export the edited file and select a different format if you wish.

Screen Recorder supports popular video formats like MP4, AVI, and MOV, so it can be used as a Vimeo to MP4 converter, too. If you wish to convert Vimeo to MP3, for example to extract music from the recorded video clip, Movavi Screen Recorder can serve as a video-to-audio converter as well – just select the MP3 format.

Finally, click the Save button and wait while the program is converting your video to the selected format. Once the process is complete, select Show in folder in the save dialog to open folder containing your copy of the video from Vimeo.
