How to remove green screen background from a video

Step 1. Install the chroma key video editor

Download and install Movavi Video Editor. Open the green screen editor, click Add Files, and choose the video you want to edit. Drag the clip onto the Timeline so you can start working with it. If you already know which background you want to use, import that image or video too. It saves time and makes the next step much smoother.

Step 2. Remove the green screen from the video

Select the clip on the Timeline and open the Background removal tool in the Tools tab. Then just click Remove, and the AI tool will do its job. After that, create an overlay track and place a new image or video underneath your main clip on the timeline so it replaces the removed background.

Step 3. Export the video

Play the clip back and watch the details closely. Hair, hands, and fast movement usually reveal whether the cutout holds up or starts to fall apart. If needed, fine-tune the result until the subject looks clean against the new background. Once everything feels natural, click Export, choose the format you need, and download the finished video.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best green screen removal tool?

That depends on how much control you want versus how much time you are willing to spend. I tend to lean toward a chroma key editor that does not overcomplicate the process. Movavi Video Editor sits in that sweet spot where AI green screen removal is quick, but still adjustable when things get tricky. There are more advanced apps out there, but they often come with a steeper learning curve. For most projects, I would rather have speed and clean results than endless sliders.

Is it possible to remove a green screen for free?

Yes, there are free tools that can handle basic video green screen removal, and for simple clips, they work surprisingly well. The trade-off usually shows up in precision and export quality. Edges can look rough, and fine details like hair tend to suffer. Still, for quick edits or testing ideas, a free green screen video editor is perfectly usable. Just do not expect studio-level polish without putting in extra effort.

Can I replace the background with a video instead of an image?

Yes, and that is where things start to feel more alive. I tend to use video backgrounds when I want motion behind the subject, something subtle like moving lights or city footage. It adds depth, but it also raises the stakes. If the motion feels off or too sharp compared to the subject, it becomes distracting. The trick is keeping both layers visually in sync.

Will background removal affect video quality?

It can, depending on how aggressive the cut is. I have seen cases where compression artifacts become more visible after the background is removed. Also, if the edges are not handled well, the subject can look slightly blurred or artificial. Export settings matter here. Keeping a decent bitrate and resolution helps preserve detail, especially around edges where most of the visual work is happening.
