What is MPEG?
Moving Picture Experts Group Phase 1
Moving Picture Experts Group
The MPEG format was created by ISO and IEC experts. Initially, it was designed as a standard for lossy compression of audio and video data. This format was released for the first time in 1993 and is still being developed. To learn more about MPEG specifications and programs that can play MPEG files, consider checking the table below.
In the MPEG file type, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 codecs are used to compress the video stream, and the audio stream is usually encoded with the MP2 (MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer II) codec. This format doesn’t work with chapters but is suitable for streaming. MPEG was widely used until the beginning of the 2000s but was then almost displaced by MP4. If you’re wondering how to open an MPEG file, look through the list below. These programs all playback MPEGs.

What is M4R?
iPhone Ringtone File
Apple created the M4R format to store iPhone ringtones created with Apple iTunes. You will most likely encounter this format if you transfer a ringtone from a computer to an iPhone. If you don’t know how to open and play M4Rs, check out the associated programs list.
The M4R file type is based on the widely supported MPEG-4 Part 14 specification. This audio format supports copyright protection. The playback of protected M4R files is not possible on any non-Apple device. However, if the M4R file isn’t copy-protected, you can open it with almost any player.
