Description
PPM, as well as other formats within the Netpbm project like PGM and PBM, was created to easily exchange graphic files between different platforms in the 1980s.

Technical details
The format supports over 16 mln colors. It uses 24 bits per pixel: 8 pixels for red, green, and blue each, unlike the other two formats in the bunch (PBM being a black and white one and PGM containing grayscale images).
