OpusClip, a San Francisco-based AI video editing startup, has secured $20 million in fresh financing led by SoftBank’s Vision Fund 2. The new round – which reportedly values the two-year-old company at about $215 million – highlights growing investor appetite for generative AI tools that automate content creation.

Founded in 2022, OpusClip offers a platform that uses multimodal AI to transform long-form videos into short, shareable clips. Creators can upload a full-length video and enter a text prompt to guide the process; AI will analyze the footage and social media trends to extract the most compelling moments and stitch them into a cohesive short video.

For SoftBank, backing OpusClip aligns with its renewed focus on AI. The Japanese tech conglomerate has been hunting for promising AI startups. In a statement, SoftBank investor Dennis Chang praised OpusClip’s “incredible ability” to build products that resonate with millions of creators.

OpusClip’s product stands out for its suite of AI-driven features. An AI Clipping tool automatically finds the best “hooks” in a video and rearranges those highlights into an attention-grabbing montage. A complementary AI Video Editor then enhances each clip by adding animated captions, reframing shots for platforms like TikTok or YouTube Shorts, cleaning up audio, and even inserting AI-generated B-roll footage for visual flair.

The goal is to eliminate tedious manual editing – OpusClip’s CEO Young Zhao says the tool removes the usual “time and learning curve” required for video editing, enabling production of clips with just “a few clicks”.

The team also launched a new OpusSearch tool to help creators repurpose and monetize their content libraries. Described as a “custom AI brain” for video archives, it lets users search their entire library by topic, keyword or even a specific speaker, instantly surfacing relevant clips that match trending themes.

The impact of these AI tools is reflected in OpusClip’s rapid growth. In the last year, over 10M creators and brands have used the platform to generate more than 170 million clips, which collectively accrued upwards of 57 billion views across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and other channels.

Tom Bilyeu of Impact Theory, lauded OpusClip for fundamentally streamlining his social media workflow. “OpusClip’s AI tool is changing everything,” Bilyeu said, noting that the platform isn’t just for media giants but for “any business owner who needs to maintain a social presence without sacrificing hours for video editing”.

The broader creator economy is increasingly embracing such automation. About 91% of brands now incorporate AI into their creator marketing strategies. Short-form video consumption is also exploding – YouTube Shorts product, for example, went from 30B in 2021 to over 70B daily views in 2025 – putting pressure on content teams to churn out more video posts at a faster pace.

With the new funding, OpusClip says it will expand its team and double down on R&D in video AI, positioning itself to ride the wave of demand for smarter content creation tools.
