Frequently asked questions

How can I convert an image to 4K resolution online?

Upscaling an image to 4K (3840 × 2160) is possible with online tools, however the results depend heavily on the original file used. Standard upscaling of an image (increasing the pixel dimensions of an image) adds no new detail and will begin to appear very poor as the dimensions of the image increase past about 2x the original size. However, there are now many AI-based upscaling tools which use very large trained models to predict the missing detail in an image when it is upscaled. They can produce very good results, especially with photos. To get the best results from upscaling an image, start with the highest resolution version of the image and use a high-quality online image converter that explicitly states the upscaling method it uses. Simply increasing the dimensions of an image without interpolation adds no value past about 2x the original size.

Does this photo converter support batch processing?

Yes. You can add as many images as you want, and they all will be processed with the same settings. So instead of re-setting the same settings for every single file in a big project, you can add all files to the converter, and it will process them all in one run like a desktop video-to-photo converter or picture converter.

What image formats are typically supported by an HD photo converter?

Typically photo HD converters work with JPEG, PNG, WebP, TIFF, BMP, and GIF files. TIFF is considered one of the best image formats. TIFF files support lossless image compression which is the reason why this format is very often used in print media and professional photography. For web graphics, we recommend using the WebP format. This format allows saving files in much smaller size while maintaining the same or even better quality as compared to traditional JPEG format. Support for RAW formats (CR2, NEF, ARW) varies from tool to tool. Most picture converters don’t support RAW files and their conversion requires a specific desktop application or dedicated plugin.

What is the difference between lossy and lossless image conversion?

In lossy formats such as JPEG, images are compressed by discarding part of the image data. The amount of data discarded is determined by a quality setting. Once an image has been saved as a lossy image, the discarded data cannot be restored. In contrast, lossless formats such as PNG and TIFF of image store the data. Therefore, for a high-quality image converter workflow, the original images should be stored in a lossless format and then exported to a lossy format for the final delivery version.

Why does my image lose quality after conversion?

Losing quality when converting images is usually a result of saving in a lossy file format, like JPEG, on a low quality setting. But also resizing images in a wrong way can lead to a loss of quality, especially when resizing down and then up again. Other factors that can lead to a quality loss are mismatches of color profiles (sRGB vs. Adobe RGB) or a decrease of the bit depth (from 16-bit to 8-bit). Also the wrong resampling method can cause problems when resizing. To avoid losing quality as much as possible, you should convert your images directly and make sure that you can set the quality of the output images yourself.
