Key features of the video stabilization software

Adjustable stabilization controls, full editing toolkit, and multi-format support in one app.

Adjustable stabilization with accuracy and shaking controls

Movavi Video Editor analyses footage frame by frame and corrects unwanted camera movement using four independent controls: Accuracy (how precisely the video is analysed), Shaking (how much movement is present in the clip), Radius, and Smoothing. Advanced settings give access to Radius and Smoothing values, which are particularly useful for highly dynamic footage – sports, action cameras, or anything shot while moving – where a more aggressive or more gentle stabilization is needed.

Edge cropping options to remove distortion artefacts

Stabilization algorithms compensate for camera movement by shifting the frame, which can expose blurred or black edges at the sides of the video. Movavi Video Editor includes the Edge cropping drop-down with options to automatically crop and hide these artefacts from the stabilized output. This step is what separates a finished, broadcast-ready stabilized clip from a raw stabilization pass that still shows processing marks.

Color correction, filters, and full editing toolkit

Stabilizing shaky footage is the starting point. Movavi Video Editor gives you a complete toolkit for the rest of the edit. Color adjustment presets and manual sliders correct brightness, contrast, and saturation. Over 10,000 effects, filters, transitions, and title presets are available from the library. Masks let you highlight or blur specific areas of the frame. Audio editing, silence removal, and AI audio denoising address the sound quality of the stabilized video.

Wide format support and up-to-4K export

Movavi Video Editor accepts all major video file formats – MP4, MKV, MOV, AVI, MTS, WMV, and others – so you can stabilize footage from any camera, drone, action camera, or phone without conversion. A free trial download lets you test the full feature set on your own footage before purchasing a licence.

Why Movavi is an effective video stabilizer for most users

Precise controls without a steep learning curve

Many free tools apply a single automatic correction with no user input – the result is either over-stabilized (unnaturally stiff) or under-stabilized (still shaky). Movavi Video Editor gives you four independent sliders so you can calibrate the stabilization to the specific characteristics of each clip, while the interface remains clean enough for complete beginners to navigate on their first use.

Stabilize and edit in the same app

A common workflow pain point is stabilizing footage in one tool, exporting, and then importing the result into a video editor to finish the project. Movavi eliminates this round-trip: stabilize, color correct, add titles and music, and export – all without switching applications or re-encoding the file a second time. This saves time, avoids quality loss from multiple export passes, and keeps the entire project in one file.

Free to download on Windows and Mac

Movavi Video Editor is available as a free download for both Windows and Mac, with a 7-day trial giving full access to the stabilization tool – including preview, export, and all adjustable parameters – before any payment is required. The trial adds a watermark to exported files; the paid licence removes this.

How to stabilize a video with Movavi – 5 steps

From a shaky clip to a smooth, stabilized video file that’s ready to export in minutes.

Step 1. Download and install the app

Download and run the installation file. Then install the program and launch it.

Step 2. Import your video

Click Add Files and select the video you want to stabilize. The video will appear in Project files. Drag the video and place it on the timeline.

Step 2. Enhance video on PC or Mac.

Step 3. Stabilize your video

From the menu on the left, select Tools. Then pick Stabilization from the list of editing tools and click Stabilize. A dialogue window will open where you can indicate the desired settings for stabilization.

Adjust the Accuracy slider to set how precisely you want the video to be analyzed for shaking. Higher accuracy will give a better result, but it will also take more time.

The Shaking slider sets how much shaking is visible on the video.

Open Advanced settings to set the values for Radius and Smoothing. We recommend setting smaller values for more dynamic videos to achieve a better result.

You can also choose one of the options from the Edge cropping drop-down list. You might need to crop the edges of your video if there are some distortions, like blurred areas.

Hit Stabilize and wait till the video is processed. Then you can click Preview to see the result. If everything’s OK, click Apply.

Step 4. Export your video

To save the result, click Export. Set the parameters for your output video and click Start.

Who uses video stabilization software

Camera shake is a universal problem – these are the most common types of users who need a video stabilizer.

Action sports and outdoor creators  ·  SPORTS & ADVENTURE

Action camera users – GoPro, DJI Action, Insta360 – filming skiing, mountain biking, surfing, or hiking consistently produce footage with significant camera shake caused by terrain vibration and body movement. Movavi Video Editor is effective on this type of footage when radius and smoothing are calibrated to the specific dynamics of the shot, turning unusable shaky clips into smooth, watchable action footage.

Educators and tutorial creators  ·  EDUCATION

Teachers and tutorial creators who record instructional video on a phone or webcam often produce footage that is slightly unsteady, particularly when moving around a classroom, a workshop, or a lab while talking to camera. A video stabilizer smooths out this incidental movement, making the recording look more deliberate and professional without requiring a tripod for every shot.

Families and event videographers  ·  PERSONAL

Family event videos like birthdays, weddings, and school plays are almost always shot handheld in crowded, fast-moving environments. The resulting footage is often shaky in the most memorable moments. Movavi lets families stabilize these clips after the fact, improving the watchability of footage that was recorded at emotionally significant moments where camera stability was not a priority.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about video stabilization software, methods, and free tools.

Which software is best for video stabilization?

Movavi Video Editor is an effective video stabilization software because it balances precise adjustable controls with an interface accessible to beginners, and includes a full video-editing toolkit alongside the stabilizing feature. iMovie is a great option for Apple users who need a quick result without configuration. Advanced editors who need fine-grained stabilization control on Windows can also try Pinnacle Studio. Adobe® Premiere® and Final Cut Pro are the professional broadcast standards but require significantly higher investment and a steeper learning curve. For a desktop stabilizer that works on both Windows and Mac with adjustable parameters, Movavi Video Editor is one of the most practical choices for the majority of users.

What is the best way to stabilize a video?

The best way to stabilize a video after recording is to use desktop video stabilization software with adjustable parameters rather than a single-button automatic tool. In Movavi Video Editor:

  1. Import the clip.
  2. Open Tools and select Stabilization.
  3. Start with a moderate Accuracy setting, preview the result, and then increase Accuracy if further smoothing is needed.
  4. Use the Shaking slider to match the correction intensity to the actual amount of movement in the clip – over-correcting a slightly unsteady clip makes it look unnaturally rigid.
  5. For highly dynamic footage, reduce the Radius and Smoothing values in Advanced settings to preserve natural camera motion while eliminating the worst jolts.
  6. Preview before applying, and use Edge cropping to remove any exposed edges from the stabilized output.

How do I stabilize a video I already took?

Post-production video stabilization works on any video file you have already recorded. To stabilize a video you already took in Movavi Video Editor:

  1. Download and install the app.
  2. Click Add Files and import the video file, drag it to the Timeline.
  3. Go to ToolsStabilization and click Stabilize.
  4. Configure the parameters (start with default settings and adjust after the preview).
  5. Review the preview, click Apply, and then export the stabilized clip.

The tool works on footage from any camera – smartphone, DSLR, action camera, or drone. If the original recording has a very severe shake or is heavily compressed, stabilization will reduce but not eliminate all movement; for extreme cases, a dedicated professional tool applies more aggressive algorithms, though at a significantly higher cost.

How can I stabilize my video for free?

Several video stabilizers are available without cost. Movavi Video Editor offers a free download with a 7-day full-access trial so you can test the software on your actual footage before deciding to purchase. iMovie is completely free and includes a stabilization option in its editing tools. Clipchamp offers basic video stabilization for free without any installation. Kapwing is a free video stabilizer app that works without installing an app, though it imposes file-size limits and watermarks on the free tier. DaVinci Resolve includes a powerful stabilizer effect – it is the most capable free software available, but it has a significantly steeper learning curve than other tools. For most users who need a tool that is easy to set up and produces good results on real-world footage, Movavi Video Editor or iMovie are the most practical starting points.
