Have you ever wondered what takes up the most space on your Mac’s hard drive? A quality hard drive diagnostics program will show you how much storage space is taken up by old and/or large files and unnecessary apps. By deleting them, you can free up gigabytes of space on your hard drive and increase the storage capacity of your computer. The question is how to view all these files and folders wasting precious space on your Mac.
Try Movavi Mac Cleaner – it’s a powerful disk space analyzer for Mac. With this software, you can quickly locate files you don’t need anymore and safely remove them. Mac Cleaner will also help you take care of many other “housekeeping” tasks: do a full system cleanup, find and remove duplicate files, uninstall unnecessary apps, protect the system from threats, and much more.
To learn how to check disk space on Mac, just download Mac Cleaner and follow the short guide below.
Download and run the .dmg file and follow the onscreen installation instructions.
When you launch Mac Cleaner, it will run a special scanner and display your Mac’s status, calculating how much space is taken up by junk files (temporary files, trash, etc.). If you want to remove them all immediately, just click Start Cleaning. You can also review the Quick Cleanup options at the bottom of the program window. Note that the Quick Cleanup option only removes junk files; to find and delete no longer needed apps and folders, keep reading.
Open the Disk Usage tab. If you want to scan your entire computer, your user folder will already be selected, and you can start scanning right away. For the purpose of checking specific folders, click Add Folders and select the appropriate directories, or simply drag and drop them into the program window. Click Scan to start the process.
As soon as the scanning process is complete, you’ll see a list of the identified files and folders sorted by size from largest to smallest. To view the contents of a folder, just click it once. You can easily navigate around the folders in the list in the way as you use Column View in Finder. The files and folders are marked with different colors: red for the largest ones, yellow for the medium-sized, and green for the smallest ones.
To delete any files or folders, just click the checkbox next to the target items. A grey box next to a folder means that it’s reserved by the system and cannot be deleted; however, you can still delete individual files from this folder – just click it to view its contents and mark the files you want to delete. To start deleting the selected files, click Remove.
